At the age of 8, he was captivated by the movie Shaolin Temple starring Jet Li, which motivated him to train in Shaolin martial arts despite his family's initial opposition. Before entering the film industry, Wang worked as an unskilled laborer and faced challenges due to his height when pursuing acting. However, his breakthrough came with the independent film Blind Shaft (2003), earning him the Best New Performer prize at the Golden Horse Awards.
